The reasons for the aging of insulating rubber sheets are usually related to the following aspects:

1. Moisture

The effect of moisture has two aspects: when rubber is exposed to rain or soaked in water in a humid atmosphere, due to the extraction and dissolution of water-soluble substances and water-based substances in the rubber by water, it will only be damaged by hydrolysis or absorption, etc. Especially under the alternating effect of water immersion and atmospheric exposure, the damage to rubber will accelerate. However, in some cases, moisture will not damage rubber and may even delay the aging effect.

2. Ozone

Ozone has a much higher chemical activity than oxygen and is more harmful. It can also cause molecular chain breakage, but the effect of ozone on rubber varies depending on whether the rubber is deformed or not. When acting on deformed rubber (mainly unsaturated rubber), the cracks are straight along the direction of the applied stress (so-called “ozone cracking”). When acting on undeformed rubber, only an oxide film is formed without cracks.

3. Mechanical stress

Under the repeated action of mechanical stress, the rubber molecular chains will break and generate free radicals, which will cause an oxidation chain reaction and constitute a mechanochemical process. The mechanical cleavage of molecular chains and the mechanical activation of the oxidation process. Which one prevails depends on the conditions. In addition, the stress effect only leads to ozone cracking.
