In stable management, the thickness of bedding is a crucial factor. It not only directly affects the comfort and health of the horses but also relates to the cleanliness and maintenance of the stable.Appropriate bedding thickness can provide a comfortable resting environment for the horses and also help reduce ammonia odor, keeping the stable dry and clean.
Generally, there are various bedding laying schemes in stables, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
A common scheme is to lay bedding over two-thirds of the stable area, with a thickness of about 45 cm along the three walls and an average thickness of about 15 cm in the middle. This scheme saves bedding and is convenient for stable workers to clean and add water or feed.
Another scheme is to lay bedding over two-thirds of the stable area during the day and cover the entire stable at night, maintaining a thickness of about 45 cm along the three walls and an average thickness of about 15 cm in the middle. This scheme is advantageous as it provides a comfortable resting environment for the horses and reduces the possibility of abrasions.
In addition, there is a scheme where the entire stable is covered with bedding all day long, with a thickness of about 45 cm along the three walls and an average thickness of about 15 cm in the middle. The advantage of this scheme is that it keeps the stable clean and dry, making the horses’rest more comfortable.

Using the”three high and one low”principle to lay bedding is also an ideal choice. The”three high and one low”principle means that the bedding thickness along the three walls without doors is about 45 cm,and the average thickness in the middle is about 15 cm.The advantage of this method is that it can make horse manure more concentrated and easier to clean, thus saving bedding. At the same time,it can prevent horses from getting stuck in the corner when lying down or rolling over, avoiding accidental injuries. When the average thickness of the bedding reaches 15 cm or more, horse urine will seep through, keeping the surface of the bedding clean and reducing the spread of ammonia odor. This not only improves air quality but also benefits the health of the horses.
The use of rubber livestock bedding also has a significant effect on improving the stable environment.Similar to dairy cows and other livestock that are often tied up and have limited outdoor activity, their hooves frequently rub against hard ground, which can easily lead to arthritis and other diseases.Using rubber livestock bedding can effectively reduce or prevent such occurrences. Moreover, the problem of slippery ground due to uncleaned manure can also be solved by laying rubber livestock bedding, preventing horses from slipping and falling.
For different application scenarios, there are also different specifications and designs for cattle bedding.
For example, square, rectangular, and triangular cattle bedding are commonly available in various lengths, with a width of 1-2 meters and a thickness of 15-22 millimeters. The surface of these bedding has evenly distributed anti-slip blocks, and the back is designed with fine grooves to enhance the anti-slip effect.Such designs are very suitable for milking parlors, pasture paths, feeding lanes, unloading platforms, and weighing platforms in livestock farms.Although these bedding are mainly used for other livestock, their design concepts can also be referenced for the selection of horse stall mats.
